The office-pool classic

Squares grids have been an office tradition for decades: claim squares before the game, shuffle the axes once everyone is in, and follow along quarter by quarter. Fans call the most popular version super bowl squares — the same game works for any football matchup all season long.

The grid is simple: 100 squares, digits 0–9 on both axes. Each axis maps to the last digit of one team's score. Whoever owns the square where the two digits meet takes the quarter. No skill required, every score change counts, and it works just as well for the playoffs as for a Thursday night game.

How squares work

  • Each axis is the last digit of a team's score — numbers 0–9 get shuffled once everyone has claimed squares.
  • After each quarter, find where the two digits meet: that square's owner wins the quarter.
  • 100 squares, 100 chances — every score change matters until the final whistle.
  • Also known as the office classic around the big game — works for any football game.

Tips

  • Shuffle last: fill every square first, then shuffle the axes so nobody picks their numbers.
  • Share the link: the grid travels in the URL — friends open the same grid instantly, nothing to install.
  • Print: the sheet prints as clean black-and-white line art on one Letter/A4 page.
  • Variants: 25-square and 50-square boards · 100-square.

What are super bowl squares?

Super bowl squares is the office-pool name for this grid game, played most around the big game in January. The board is identical to any football squares grid: claim squares, shuffle the 0–9 axes, and match each quarter's last digits. We use the generic name "football squares" everywhere on this site, but it's the same game.

How do I print the grid?

Click Print — the sheet outputs as clean black-and-white line art and fits one Letter/A4 page. Names you typed stay on the printed grid; empty cells stay blank for filling by hand.

Can multiple people fill one grid?

Yes — click "Create shared grid" to get a link. Everyone who opens it writes into the same grid; squares are first-come, first-served. The host can reshuffle the axes at any time.

How are winners decided?

At the end of each quarter, take the last digit of each team's score and find the square where they intersect. That square's owner wins the quarter (four chances per game).
