Pick'em pools, explained
Pick'em is the workhorse of office pools: everyone picks the winner of every game, every week, all season. No eliminations, no spreadsheets if you do it right, and the water-cooler arguments run from September to February. Here's how to set one up that basically runs itself.
Straight-up vs confidence scoring
Straight-up: one point per correct pick. Simple, transparent, everyone understands it in ten seconds. This is the right choice for 90% of pools.
Confidence points: you also rank every game from 1 to 16 by confidence, and a correct pick scores its confidence value. Rewards actual football insight over luck, at the cost of a steeper learning curve and five extra minutes per entry per week.
The settings that prevent arguments
- Deadline: each game's kickoff. Not 'first game of the week', not 'Friday at noon'.
- Tiebreaker: total points of the Monday night game, closest wins — written down in week 1.
- Missed week: a missed week scores zero, not the league average. Sympathy scoring destroys standings integrity.
- Weekly prizes plus a season prize keeps mid-table players engaged in December.
Running it in ten minutes a week
The loop that works: share the pick sheet link early in the week, deadline reminder the day before, results and standings posted the morning after the last game. The sheet linked below scores itself — correct picks are marked as games go final, and everyone sees their running total without you exporting anything.
FAQ
What is a pick'em pool?
A season-long contest where everyone picks the winner of every game each week. Each correct pick scores a point (or a confidence value), and the highest season total wins.
What are confidence points in pick'em?
A scoring variant where you rank each game 1–16 by how confident you are. Correct picks earn their assigned value, so knowing which favorites are real matters more than raw pick count.
What's the fairest tiebreaker for a pick'em pool?
Closest guess of the Monday night game's total points. It's independent of the picks themselves, easy to verify, and needs no extra games.
